What is Fairtrade?

Fairtrade products allow for the producer of the item (i.e. the farmers) to be paid a fair wage, work in safe conditions and means that the item has a verified social impact. When you buy a Fairtrade product, you're supporting farmers and workers, and helping them improve their lives and their communities.

Key benefits of Fairtrade

The FAIRTRADE Mark means that products are sourced whilst valuing people and the planet, and fundamentally promotes environmentally sustainable practices. The international Fairtrade system represents the world's largest and most recognized independent certification system, representing over 1.7 million farmers and workers in 73 countries.

The Fairtrade certification organization is 50% owned by farmers meaning these standards are informed by the workers it directly impacts. Every purchase of our Fairtrade products enables farmers to invest in projects chosen by their community.

The Fairtrade Premium

Another advantage to choosing Fairtrade is the Fairtrade Premium. For every product sold, an additional Fairtrade Premium is given back to communities. This means that farmers and workers can invest back into various projects, within the health, education, clean drinking water, and the insurance sectors.

Fairtrade Minimum Price

Fairtrade Minimum Price ensures that farmers and workers deserve a fair price for their hard work. So when you're enjoying a Fairtrade chocolate bar or purchasing fresh cut Fairtrade flowers, you know you are helping to make the world a better place.

Coffee

$552 million in Fairtrade Premium generated from coffee sales since 2015 and 15% of Fairtrade coffee farmers are women. With price volatility, extreme weather conditions, and with an unstable workforce, coffee farmers are left to struggle with low incomes. To combat this, Fairtrade Minimum Price is instituted so farmers have a crucial safety net against sudden price drops.

Bananas

IGA supports Fairtrade's dedication to improving banana workers' lives. Part of this dedication is the Fairtrade Base Wage. This initiative means that regardless of a country's legal minimum wage, a banana farm worker will receive a base wage - set at 7% of the living wage of the country they live in.

Flowers

$48 million in Fairtrade Premium generated for flower workers since 2015 and 81% of the Fairtrade Premium is invested in education, financial and healthcare services for flower workers and their families. Flower workers and flower farms also benefit from hands-on support and training from the local Fairtrade producer network. Fairtrade flowers are available at select IGA stores.

Cocoa

Mostly farmed in West Africa, cocoa, while delicious, is produced in far from equitable working conditions. Fairtrade practices are working to stop child labour and unjust wages, and improve working conditions for cocoa workers across the globe.
